The UK-based construction materials provider says the innovation Challenge is open to existing and new suppliers, university teams and all organisations and individuals with an idea to support the acceleration of the company’s journey to net zero.

For this year's challenge, entrants are being encouraged to submit ideas focusing on energy efficiency or innovation resulting in improvements for the industry. The winning entry will then be brought to life in partnership with Tarmac, as it builds on what it says significant progress in embedding sustainability across all of its operations, delivering emissions reduction and maximising the reuse of materials.

Jonathan Harry, Tarmac procurement director, said: “Collaborative working is absolutely key in identifying and bringing forward innovation that supports decarbonisation. There is a huge amount of creativity, energy and potential within our supply chain and beyond, and we’d encourage anyone with an idea – however big or small – to get involved.”

Since launching the first innovation challenge in 2019 Tarmac has brought forward a range of ideas in partnership with suppliers, from reduced plastic packaging through to bespoke electric vehicles and totally new-to-market innovations.

The company says it is committed to supporting the delivery of a lower carbon built environment and has set out ambitious goals to achieve by 2030 and beyond in its ACT Sustainability Strategy.

Responses to the Innovation Challenge can be submitted online at https://crh.eu.brightidea.com/TARMAC2022 by 3 October 2022.

Finalists will be reviewed by a panel of internal subject matter experts – with the eventual winner unveiled during Tarmac’s Supplier Sustainability Week, which commences on 7 November 2022.
