Aggregate Industries has welcomed the UK’s Sustainable Construction Strategy which has just been published by the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. Nonetheless, the company has underlined plan to achieve higher targets than those set out under the new strategy.
According to Aggregate Industries, the strategy’s numerous short term targets aimed at assisting the government in meeting their long term sustainability objectives are the way forward. The company has said that in line with its sustainable achievements, these new government targets present it fresh opportunities for challenging its own working practices along with those of its peers.
Nonetheless, Aggregate Industries targets go beyond those set out in the new strategy. The company has pledges to deliver a 20% reduction in carbon emissions from construction processes and associated transport per tonne of material produced by 2012 compared to 2008 levels. This is 5% more than the target outlined in the strategy.
Other aims set out by Aggregate Industries include reducing potable water usage in manufacturing and construction by 25% (the strategy target is 20%) compared to 2008 usage. The company also plans to send zero waste to landfill by 2012, despite the strategy’s target of only 50%, and reduce construction packaging waste by 20% by 2012, compared to 2008 figures.
