Cemex, working with SOS Children’s Villages, has officially opened the doors to a new orphanage in Meulaboh, Indonesia for children who lost their parentins in the 2004 tsunami. The new centre which was funded by contributions from Cemex’s 67,000-strong global workforce, will provide homes for 150 children orphaned by the disaster.
The new village is built on a 4.2acre plot and provides the children with 15 houses to deliver family-based care and will also help to ensure they receive a good education.
“In the first phase of a disaster, protecting children is the number one priority. However, the SOS focus is on long-term care,” said SOS president Helmut Kutin. “We have built homes and families for orphaned children for over half a century. We rely on generous donors like Cemex to remember orphaned children long after the disaster, when hope for a new beginning is what they need and the SOS Village at Meulaboh is a visible expression of this hope.”
