Lafarge UK’s Cauldon Works in Staffordshire has become the latest cement plant to be granted consent to trial waste derived fuels from the Environment Agency. The news follows on from Cemex gaining permission to use the fuel at its Barrington site in the UK on a permanent basis.
The fuel to be trialled at the Cauldon Works will be derived from paper, plastic and biodegradable waste and will be processed before delivery to the site in pellet form. The new fuel is similar to sewage pellets that are already used at the site, so no further investment is needed to get the trial underway. The site, which opened in 1957, also uses chipped scrap tyres and has applied for consent to also use recovered fuel oil.
According to reports on the new status, Lafarge claims that the fuel will help divert waste from landfill and cut carbon emissions at the 1million tonne per year capacity plant by 17,000tonnes per year.
