The Union of Aggregate Producers (UNPG) has awarded its grand prize for environmental work to Granulats Vicat, the aggregates branch of France-based Vicat Cement.
It was awarded the prize for its efforts in restoring the Veyle River, which lies on the side of the Saint-Denis-Lès-Bourg Quarry, eastern France, to its former self. The river has undergone major modifications from the 1950s to the 1970s for hydraulic use by the plant.
Vicat's goal is to restore the river to a healthy ecological state by 2015.
