Nurturing nature

Quarrying is often viewed by the public as a destructive activity, but through well planned quarry restoration disused sites can actually improve the natural environment. Claire Symes reports on one award winning project. Public opposition to the opening or extending of a new quarry often focuses on the loss of countryside, but through careful management quarries can enhance the natural landscape. Growing numbers of quarries are being successfully restored and managed to create habitats for wild animals and plants and to offer facilities for local communities.
