Rigid or articulated

The current trend towards development of larger articulated dump trucks offers quarry operators an alternative to rigid trucks. Mike Woof reports The ability to cope with steeper ramp hauls and provide traction in areas of heavy rainfall or on sites with high clay content has helped to boost the popularity of articulated dump trucks (ADTs). Sales of these machines have been growing in recent years, with many quarry operators now using ADTs instead of the more conventional rigid trucks and there are sound
A 36tonne payload rigid truck is more costly to buy than an equivalent ADT with a similar capacity but the rigid truck has a considerably longer lifespan than its equivalent ADT. Rigid trucks can also be rebuilt and repowered and can clock up long working hours while the more complex ADT may reach its service life in much shorter time.

In for the big haul

Norwegian manufacturer Moxy is pushing the boundaries of articulated dump truck (ADT) design with its new MT51 model, which is aimed at both earthmoving and quarrying applications. This machine has a capacity of 46.3tonnes (51 short tons), putting the machine head to head with Bell's B50, right at the top of the payload class in the ADT market.

Moxy claims its MT51 has the edge in terms of payload, making it the biggest ADT on the market right now and giving it a cost/tonne advantage over ADTs in the smaller size classes.

Level capacity for the MT51 is 22.8m3 and heaped capacity is 28.8m3 but the sloping chassis and bowl-shaped body used on smaller Moxy trucks has been retained. According to Moxy, this helps lower the centre of gravity and ensures stability on uneven terrain and means it has no need for expensive low profile tyres for most applications. The machine's low unladen weight should also help increase cost efficiency.

The MT51 features a 15litre Cummins QSX15 diesel to offer a good power to weight ratio and this drives through an Allison transmission system.

If the efforts of quarry operators across Europe in recent years have been successful, then introduction of new harmonised asphalt standards next year should go unnoticed. Claire Symes reports

E marking for construction products is designed to harmonise standards across EU Member States and open the way for greater cross border trade. Aggregates and bitumen binders have already undergone the CE marking process in recent years and on 1 January 2008, asphalt will join the CE marked club.
Although the new EN13108 standards will change the way asphalt mixes are described and specified, if the terms are correctly applied the materials themselves will remain the same. Tarmac director of

Recycled aggregates often end up in low-end materials but a recent investigation shows that it is possible to reuse them to produce premium products. Claire Symes takes a look at the performance related approach

Complex environmental issues often mean that gaining planning permission to extract virgin aggregates in Europe is a challenging task. But recycled aggregates could offer the opportunity to bridge the gap between available aggregates reserves and the demands of the construction sector.
In an ideal world recycled materials should be suitable for almost any application. However, certain barriers exist which prevent this and often results in such materials being reused in low-grade materials. The UK's Waste Resource Action Programme (WRAP) has recently published the results of an investigation which could clear the way for use of recycled aggregates in premium products.

Metso Minerals has extended its range of Lokotrack mobile crushing units with the launch of the LT116 jaw plant. According to the company, the 50tonne unit, which is the smallest in the 30-strong Lokotrack range, is both compact and easily transportable.
Central to the design of the 400tonne per hour capacity LT116 is the C116 jaw which features a new cavity design for better grip and maximum inter-cavity crushing. The jaw unit also has an automatically adjustable feeder speed to give the plant efficient and continuous choke feeding. The jaw plates of the C116 are interchangeable between the fixed and moveable side, which Metso claims offers longer lifetime and better operational performance.
The crusher has a feed opening of 1150mm by 800mm to give the machine a maximum feed size of 640mm. Based on the feeding system, the LT116 can be equipped with a 6m3 or optional 9m3 feed hopper. For quick set-up, the feed hopper flanks can be folded hydraulically.
Power for the crusher is provided by a 310kW Caterpillar engine. Metso has also fitted its IC500 intelligent control system to the unit to offer a single-button process start, automatic control and a built-in diagnostic...

From the depths

Enlargement of Rotterdam Harbour in the Netherlands will call for one of the largest marine aggregates extraction sites in Europe. Ad Stolk from the Netherlands' Rijkswaterstaat (Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management) reports

Marine aggregates form a vital source of sand for many construction markets in Europe, but in the Netherlands much of the material extracted is not used for concrete production. The Netherlands' current annual 42 million tonnes extraction is mainly used for coastal nourishment and fill but a new project is set to increase this total significantly.
Excavation work on one of the latest marine aggregates projects in the Netherlands will not only allow a new development to go ahead, it will also provide the material to create the land it needs. The project is an extension of Rotterdam's harbour to provide both new dockside area and also a larger deep draft area to allow large ships to use the new facilities.
The enlargement of the new harbour area, which is known as Maasvlakte 2, will include reclamation of 20 km² which is needed. Half of this area will be used for harbour related activities such as container terminals, distribution of goods and chemical industries. All of these activities need a deep water harbour and excavation of the material to reclaim the dockside area will create a 20m deep draft for the harbour. The other half of the reclaimed land will be used for dykes, access roads and harbour basins....

The Isle of Man is world famous for the motorbike TT races and attracts motorsport fans from far and wide who want to test the island's famous roads for themselves. Probably few consider where the materials to surface the island's roads came from but for the last 128 years much of the aggregates have been sourced from Poortown Quarry.

The government owned quarry, which opened in 1880, has just been given a new lease of life which will ensure the island has enough road aggregates for another 80 years. The quarry area has been extended and operation of the site modernised with

Supply chain solution

Tyre shortages have been a serious issue for quarry operators for some time and with no quick fix on the horizon, fitting of tyre protection chains could provide the answer

Bridgestone's fire at its Togichi tyre factory in Japan, combined with a global construction boom, has resulted in a shortage of tyres for large construction equipment. In recent years reports of expensive tyres, big machines standing idle, lost production and reduced revenues - all for want of a tyre have become common.
While some operators are fitting the next best size, others are running treads down to minus 5% or paying up to €1500 to repair damaged tyres. But tyre protection chains (TPCs) - originally developed to enable pneumatic tyres to be used in quarries - could provide a more cost effective solution.
TPCs are a close chain mesh which is fitted over the face and the sidewalls of the tyre to form a barrier against damaging materials. In addition to providing protection, these chains can also improve traction, especially at a quarry face where the working surface is covered in sharp-edged loose rock. In these conditions the performance of a wheeled loader can be considerably enhanced by the use of chains.
While the financial benefits of TPCs will vary from site to site, field trials by Germany-based Rud-Erlau suggest that they could cut tyre costs by up to 72%. During the tests, a Caterpillar 988B wheeled loader operating in a German limestone quarry was fitted by TPCs to look at the cost and performance benefits.
Before the trial, the wheeled loader was running on 36/65-33 DT's, which had an average service life of 1200 hours, with a cost of €27,500 per set or €27.91 every hour. The quarry operator invested €41,000 in fitting a set of Rud-Erlau Fels Royals X16 TPCs on the machine, extending tyre service life to 12000 hours and reducing tyre costs to €2.79 per hour.
According to Rud-Erlau, if the TPCs have a minimum service life of 10,000 hours (€4.10 per hour), the total hourly tyre costs for the wheeled loade

Locking in performance

Secure bucket tooth connections are essential in the aggregates industry to avoid them becoming detached and getting caught in the crusher. The latest development from Esco promises to not only improve maintenance but also reduce the risk of lost teeth and fixings.
The Ultralok tooth system has a hammerless lock that is integrated into the point, which increases the security, and is designed to eliminate the need for separate pins or locks.
As well as the new design for the lock, the rest of the tooth shape has been remodelled to maximise machine performance in any application. The point has a low profile shape to provide greater penetration, which Esco claims improves productivity and reduces machine fuel consumption. The company has also said that the low profile shape gives a greater surface area of wear metal to reduce maintenance and the risk of downtime.
According to Esco

Conveyor maintenance

Horizon Conveyors' latest development offers safer and easier access during maintenance of conveyor rollers. According to Horizon, development of the new RapidWinch system followed on from talking to a number of maintenance engineers about the limitations of existing techniques.
"Belt lifters have traditionally adopted a lifting beam design to raise the conveyor belt, but these systems can be cumbersome and time consuming to set up if needed for changing a single roller or accessing a tight space," said Horizon managing director Alan Bowler. "The RapidWinch is designed to be more lightweight and portable."
The RapidWinch is a belt lifting system - based on a conventional design - that is formed by two parts that bolt onto the conveyor roller frame and uses hig

Pump upgrade

Grindex has unveiled its upgraded drainage pump range and the company claims that the new design triples the durability of the units. The added service life comes from increased wear resistance in the impellor which has been achieved by preventing abrasive particles from reaching the vulnerable parts of the pump. The newly designed hydraulics section with its closed impeller dramatically reduces the performance drop caused by long-term wear, according to Grindex.
Maintenance on the units has been improved with a screw adjustment for impellor realignment to take account of wear. "Before it might have taken an engineer 30 minutes to an hour to adjust the impellor but the revised design allows it to be done in five minutes," explained Grindex general manager Dan Schaffer. "The oil inspection has also been eased with access on the outside of the casing where as previously the casing would have to be removed to carry out checks."
The modular design of the base of the pump allows all the units to be converted on site from dewatering configurations to slurry pumping

Europe's railways rely on high quality aggregate to maintain both line speeds and passenger comfort. ABE reports on the technical aspects of railway ballast. The importance of aggregates to producing durable road surfacings is well publicised but the key role that quarried products play in Europe's rail network is less well known.

Smooth operator

Developments in asphalt mix design are now being matched by hi-tech innovations in paving technology. ABE takes a look at one of these in action on site in Germany

Advances in asphalt mix design have helped to create road surfacing around Europe that reduce spray in heavy rain, create less noise and offer better skid resistance. All these attributes have been achieved by careful laboratory analysis to revise the aggregates used, the material size and shape and high performance bitumen binders.
However, despite this innovative asphalt mix design, the smoothness of the finished surface has always depended on the equipment and processes used on site. But paving technology has also advanced and means that even smaller surfacing contracts can benefit from improved surface smoothness.
One road that has just received the advanced treatment is the L546 near Heidelberg in Germany, which was surfaced using a Vogele Super 1900-2 paver fitted with Navtronic Plus 3D machine control.

Crushing heritage

Cone crushers are now accepted technology but in the 1920s the Symons Brothers innovation was an unknown quantity, although an enduring one with some original units still in use. Claire Symes reports

Metso Minerals unveiled its latest HP5 cone crusher at ConExpo in March but alongside it was its ancestor - a 1934 Nordberg cone crusher.
Until six months ago the machine was part of a 500tonnes per hour plant at the John S Lane Quarry in Springfield, Massachusetts, US and is still in full working order. The unit was only replaced because the operator wanted to increase production at the limestone quarry and the 910mm head, 150tonnes per hour cone has been replaced by a new HP400 unit.
Before introduction of the cone crusher, aggregate processing was generally undertaken using a jaw or roll crusher or an Allis Chalmers gyratory crusher. The development of the cone crusher helped to improve the quality of the aggregate produced.
The Nordberg unit is based on the design concept from the Symons Brothers, which was manufactured in the US by Finnish-born Bruno Nordberg in Milwaukee from 1926. Nordberg started out building regulators for steam driven engines and also collaborated with Rudolf Diesel on the development of engines for power plants, ships and submarines. He also owned the Rex Works business that still builds concrete batch plants and conveyor parts.
Symons sold 250 units in the first year and, after the design was copied they believed the cone crusher market to be saturated, they sold the design rights to Nordberg in 1927. Nordberg was acquired by Rauma Repola in 1990 and the company later changed its name to Metso in 2001.
Nordberg went on to sell numerous more units and the popularity and durability of the design also meant that the parts for the

For centuries production of an industrial mineral has shaped the Cornish countryside but Aggregate Industries is working to return it to its natural state. The landscape of one UK county could be set to change forever because of a boom in the demand for recycled and more sustainable sources of rock. For hundreds of years, unused by-product from the china clay industry in Cornwall has been abandoned as part of the process, creating huge piles of waste material, known locally as the Cornish Alps.

For Bernt Hagen, a trip into the city with his 21-year old brother to buy a wheeled loader was the start of what is now a family enterprise centred on aggregates.

Cost focus

Rising energy prices and reducing demand means that many quarry operators are focusing on trying to lower the cost per tonne of production to maximise profitability. But according to Caterpillar international account manager Michael Porri, achieving this does not necessarily mean having to invest in new equipment.

Breaking new markets

Hydraulic breaking is the technique of choice in Europe when it comes to secondary breaking - drill and blast for this type of work has almost completely disappeared due to the safety issues. But developments in performance and power also now mean that hydraulic breakers offer an alternative method for primary breaking in some circumstances.

Do bespoke drill patterns and lengths that take bench variation into full consideration and rigs that can automatically locate and drill these sound like a space-age fantasy? Well, they are not and some quarries are already taking advantage of some of these technologies and seeing significant improvements in both productivity and safety as a result.
