Quarrying Karelia's rich seams
Aggregates from quarries in the Russian Republic of Karelia are in demand and Karlenerud is investing to keep pace. Patrick Smith reports The Russian economy is on the up, and so is the amount of money and effort that the nation is putting into upgrading outdated infrastructure. Its once heavy reliance on railways is being replaced by a growing highway sector (at least in the more populated west of the country), and modern homes and offices are being constructed. This means that huge amounts of raw materials are needed, particularly aggregates. And Russia is sitting on significant mineral and energy resources, some of which can be found in the Republic of Karelia in the north-west of Russia.
