Sandvik's QJ341+ jaw crusher is being unveiled at steinexpo 2017
More than 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the 10th steinexpo demonstration show for the global construction materials industry. Guy Woodford & Patrick Smith look at some of the exciting new models being exhibited at the keenly anticipated German event, staged in Europe’s biggest basalt quarry.

The expected tens of thousands of attendees are in for a treat during the four-day (30 August – 2 September) steinexpo 2017 exhibition organised by Geoplan. More than 260 exhibitors will be showcasing over 360 different new and proven branded equipment models in a show space covering more than 200,000m² of the MHI Nieder-Ofleiden basalt quarry in central Germany.

Major global OEMs exhibiting include Metso, Sandvik, Caterpillar, Volvo Construction Equipment, CASE Construction Equipment, Kleemann, Komatsu, Doosan, Terex Finlay and Powerscreen, with MIRO; UEPG (European Aggregates Association); VDMA, and VDBUM being key event partners.

It is unsurprising that steinexpo continues to be such a huge draw for globally renowned quarrying OEMs given that Germany is the biggest national aggregates market in Europe – producing 545 million tonnes/year in 2015 alone, according to latest UEPG figures.

Furthermore, strong demand for construction machines is being reported by the German equipment manufacturing association, the VDMA. Its latest report says that following a good start to 2017, the upward trend has continued for the construction and building equipment industry. The VDMA analysis says that the sector expects to increase its total turnover by 5% by the end of the year to around €14.6 billion.

The research and development department of NLMK Clabecq, where Quard is produced, works at widening the range, and hopes to produce Quard 550 from 4-60mm soon. The company also offers its Quard with nominal hardnesses of 400, 450 and 500HB.

As it benefits from slabs coming from its mother company, made with equipment using the most modern steel-making technology, it can produce on specific request, steel plates with a very high level of toughness at -40°C. NLMK says this results in steel plates with a high workability, improving the efficiency of operations, and offering accurate cutting and easy welding in the workshop and in the field.

geo-konzept’s comprehensive portfolio of software and hardware solutions for the quarry and mining industries will be on show.

With its QuarryManager software, geo-konzept says it’s easy to have an up-to-date quarry/mine map on a daily basis. QuarryManager can import QuarryX software-processed jobsite data directly, allowing for daily updating of your quarry/mine map. Thanks to QuarryManager’s deep integration with QuarryX, you get even more value out of your face profiling/blast design data. Moreover, it is possible to create cross sections and to do accurate volume calculations. QuarryManager’s direct link to QuarryPocket GPS software allows the user to integrate logged GPS data quickly and easily into the digital quarry/mine map. With all these features, QuarryManager is a valuable tool for documentation and extraction planning in your quarry or mine.

Meanwhile, XR6 UAV allows the user to create aerial images of a quarry or mine in a very simple way. The autopilot system is very easy to use and the XR6 can be operated by anyone after a short training by geo-konzept’s UAV specialists.

The XR6 Survey-Bundle creates highly accurate and up-to-date data from your quarry/mine. This data can be imported into QuarryManager software as a digital mine map, to support managers and service providers in their decisions. Using the XR6 also improves the operational safety, because the pilot can perform the survey far away from heavy machines or areas where there is the risk of rock fall. Together with VolumeX software, the XR6 is the perfect tool for calculating stockpile volumes. First, a point cloud will be created from photogrammetric data. With just one mouse click, VolumeX will calculate a solid stock pile model including volume and tonnage based on this data.

geo-konzept’s RiGuide not only saves the manual stake out of drill holes and a lot of time, it also prevents measurement and communication errors referring to planned drill hole positions.

QuarryX software offers powerful design tools for each kind of blast, based on 3D data. To put the design precisely into practice with the drill rig, geo-konzept offers the RiGuide guidance system as a retrofit solution for all common brands of drill rigs.

With RiGuide it is possible to position the drill bit exactly on the hole collar points as they were designed in QuarryX, and the planned drill parameters (drilling direction, angle and depth) can be exactly implemented. The RiGuide terminal guides the driller exactly to the hole collar positions and saves the person in charge of the manual stake out. By avoiding too short or too deep holes, on the one hand, vibrations can be minimised; on the other hand drilling and follow up costs can be optimised.
