The US manufacturer says the new loaders are up to 10% more productive and have up to 20% lower maintenance costs compared to the previous 980M and 982M powershift models.

New to this class of medium wheeled loaders, the Cat 980 XE and 982 XE models feature a Cat-designed and manufactured continuous variable transmission (CVT) that is claimed to deliver increased fuel efficiencies up to 35% and lower maintenance costs up to 25% compared to the M series models. The new loaders include an expanded technology platform designed to increase machine performance and improve operating efficiency.

Cat Payload with Assist is standard on all 980 and 982 series loaders and provides an accurate weighing of bucket payloads. This new technology includes low-lift-weigh and manual tip-off functions. The optional Cat Advanced Payload is designed to expand the system’s functionality with Lists-Management, Multitask- & Manual-Add Modes and Tip-off assist. Compatible with third-party scale house software, it can wirelessly integrate the machine in the scale-house process with Dispatch-for-Loading (for which an additional subscription is required).

The new Cat Autodig with Auto Set Tires is designed to promote proper loading technique to significantly reduce tyre slip and loading time. Cat says it can automate the complete bucket loading cycle to deliver consistently high bucket fill factors for up to 10% more productivity.

Caterpillar is offering the CVT option for the first time in this size class on the 980 XE and 982 XE models. The company says the CVT technology leverages over 10 years of production experience with the 966K XE, 966M XE and 972M XE models.

The new 980 XE and 982 XE feature a high-efficiency continuously variable parallel path drive system. It combines a direct mechanical path from the engine to the wheels with a Hystat variator.

Cat says that deep system integration of the CVT, engine, hydraulic and cooling system significantly improve fuel efficiency up to 35%, through lowering the rated engine speed with high rimpull. These models feature fine rimpull modulation capability and virtual gears to allow operators a seamless switch from powershift machines. Operating noise levels are also reduced.
