The initiative on June 12 was coordinated by the European Chamber of Commerce (Eurocham) of which quarrying and construction equipment distributor SMT is a member.

In a village located in the district of Tokan in the Municipality of Abomey-Calavi, members of the Eurocham team were welcomed by a crowd made up of women in charge of the daily management of the forest, children and those in charge of this area.

The captain responsible for water and forests of the municipality of Abomey-Calavi, who also coordinates the classified forest which hosted the initiative was present to welcome the delegation. He underlined that the forest domain extends over more than 50 hectares and each year, a massive reforestation exercise is organised over its entire area.

SMT Benin says this activity is carried out by the villagers because the survival of the village depends essentially on the marketing of bundles of wood. Thus, it is necessary to systematically reforest so as not to cut trees in other areas. This planting is capital for the protection of the environment.

The reforestation included the planting of young acacia plants. Espérance, Carmel and Carine represented SMT by participating with other European companies (including Bolloré, CFAO and Siemens) in the initiative.
