The 473 Volvo Group Southern Africa (SA) has inaugurated an upgraded near US$5 million (R60 million) integrated regional parts distribution centre in Boksburg, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The 13,000m² facility will serve Volvo's African markets in the southern hemisphere, including the whole of southern Africa and countries such as Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya, but excluding Angola. It will house more than 52,000 consolidated parts worth $22.96 million (R280 million) for all Volvo brands including Volvo Trucks, Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Bus, 670 Volvo Penta, as well as 2453 Renault Trucks and UD Trucks Southern Africa, now part of the Volvo Group Southern Africa.

Colin Govender, general manager of Logistics Services for Volvo Group’s southern and East African region, says the investment is in line with the current and anticipated growth in the region, and further showcases Volvo’s commitment to African expansion. The new consolidated parts centre will lead to more speedy parts deliveries, more streamlined and efficient operations, as well as increased warehousing capacity for Volvo’s brands.

“As Volvo Group SA, we believe that the merger of our warehouse facilities under one roof will enable us to better support the company’s future growth within southern and East Africa,” says Torbjörn Christensson, president of the Volvo Group SA. “It is therefore a strategic investment in our future and will enable us to support our customers more efficiently and timely, especially in light of the significant volume growth our brands have experienced over the last couple of years.”

Parts will be supplied from the various brands’ central parts distribution centres in France (Renault Trucks), Japan and Singapore (UD Trucks), Sweden and Belgium (Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Bus, Volvo Penta and Volvo Trucks). “We have agreements in place with the various central distribution centres for the prompt processing of emergency parts, as well as for day and stock orders,” says Govender.

The facility will have a same-day delivery turnaround time for dealers within the range of 50km, and a 24/7 lead time for emergency parts.  Overnight and next day deliveries are for the rest of the dealers across South Africa, as well as up to twice weekly dedicated deliveries to dealers outside South Africa. The facility employs 52 industrial workers and 16 office bearers.
