The global competition is open to both professional and amateur photographers and is intended to showcase the practical use, strength, durability and beauty of concrete as well as its sustainability advantages.

Entrants are challenged to submit photos that highlight the vital role that the world’s most used human-made product plays in our daily life.

Participants can submit images in the following four categories.

Urban design and use: Images of the city landscapes and buildings around us, both well-known and hidden away - from the Sydney Opera House to the tower block you might have grown up in.

Infrastructure: Photographs of our infrastructure, in our cities and rural areas, above and below ground: highways, bridges, airports, stations and dams, let's celebrate the concrete buildings supporting and enabling our life.

Concrete in daily life: Showcasing the human side of concrete - how it's used and interacted with daily. Also includes small scale applications of concrete.

Concrete on video: Up to a one-minute video clip of concrete in life across any application whether a small-scale use or infrastructure.

GCCA chief executive Dinah McLeod said: “Concrete, and its vital role in our world, is the foundation of so many of our human stories. The ‘Concrete in Life’ competition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase concrete’s strong, durable, renewable, resilient and beautiful aspects that make up our built environment. We hope that this competition will inspire participants to see the unique ways that it can be used all over the world.”

To enter the competition, participants should post a picture that they’ve taken on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #ConcreteinLife, along with the hashtag for the category they’d like to enter: #UrbanConcrete, #ConcreteInfrastructure, #ConcreteInDailyLife or #ConcreteinLifeVideo. They should also tag the GCCA - @the.gcca on Instagram or @theGCCA on Twitter.

The competition will be judged by a panel of industry and design experts to select one winner and one runner-up each for the professional and amateur categories as well as one overall winner for the “Best Concrete in Life” photo of the year from the eight finalists. The overall winner will receive a US$10,000 prize, with each of the remaining amateur and professional winners receiving a US$2,500 prize.

Judging the entries are John Fairley, photographer and creative director of Curious Productions; Gabriele Galimberti, National Geographic photographer; Gian Luca Barone, senior associate of Zaha Hadid Architects; and Dinah McLeod, chief executive of the GCCA

The competition will run from today (October 7) until 11:59 PM (PT time) 18 November 2020.

Launched in January 2018, the GCCA is dedicated to developing and strengthening the concrete and cement sector’s contribution to sustainable construction.
