Following its recent acquisition of Hope, Breedon is now the fourth largest ready-mixed concrete company in Great Britain. It also operates the most concrete plants of any company in the industry. These are just two of the findings of BDS Marketing Research’s annual report on the ready-mixed concrete industry which has just been published.
Entitled Estimated market shares of ready-mixed concrete companies in Great Britain, the BDS report also states that Hanson remains as the largest concrete supplier, followed by Cemex and Tarmac. Together with Breedon, Aggregate Industries makes up the top five. BDS estimates that these businesses represent two thirds of the market.
“The rest of the industry is represented by around 400 batch and volumetric companies,” stated the report author, Andy Sales. “It is the smaller companies which are most active in developing new plants. Over the last year, we have picked up nearly 30 planning consents for new plants. All but four of these were made by independent companies,” said Sales.
