The new ‘Estimated Outputs (2024) of Asphalt Plants in Great Britain’ report from BDS Marketing Research (BDS) suggests asphalt volumes have experienced a small decline, resulting in another year of reduced volumes.
In 2024, the industry market research consultancy BDS estimates total market output at around 26 million tonnes, down by around 0.2 million tonnes from the previous year.
BDS believes the drivers behind the decline in annual volumes in 2024 are uncertainty, a decrease in demand for construction activity, and economic pressures, including higher costs and longer timescales.
Over 35 asphalt-producing companies are identified in the recent report, jointly operating more than 200 asphalt plants across Great Britain. In 2024, Holcim UK continues to hold the leading position as an asphalt producer in Great Britain, with the top four producers (Holcim UK, Tarmac, Heidelberg Materials and Breedon) jointly accounting for more than 70% of the asphalt market.
