Breedon Group has unveiled its new advocacy campaign to support the British cement sector.
Breedon Group chief executive officer Rob Wood has written to the relevant ministers and key officials in the Departments of Business and Trade, and Energy Security and Net Zero, respectively, including cabinet ministers Ed Miliband and Peter Kyle.
“Using public procurement policy to support domestically produced cement would unlock huge opportunities and ensure the government’s investment in housing and infrastructure delivers wider economic growth,” Wood said.
“It would also protect thousands of highly skilled, well-paid jobs across all four nations.”
According to Breedon, around a quarter of British MPs have a Breedon operation in their constituencies.
The new campaign follows Breedon’s parliamentary engagement campaign last year which highlighted the impact of carbon regulation, energy prices, labour costs and imports on the domestic cement sector.
Breedon has asked for government intervention on the following areas:
- Establishing a robust carbon border adjustment mechanism.
- Accelerating support for carbon capture technologies.
- Promoting domestically produced cement in public procurement.
- Addressing the wider competitiveness challenges.
“We will continue our engagement throughout 2026 as we strongly encourage the Government and our customers to ‘back British cement’,” Wood said.
