The British Geological Society has announced Jonathan Ford as its new director of BGS National Geoscience.
In his new role, Ford will oversee the programme and the delivery of the fundamental scientific research with key focuses on UK geological knowledge and data, both on- and offshore, from mapping and modelling.
Ford brings more than 24 years of experience to the role, including at BGS, and will be based out of Keyworth, Nottinghamshire.
“I’m delighted to be appointed as the new director of BGS National Geoscience. We have a vital role to play in improving the understanding of the geology of the UK and I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues and partners to continue to deliver relevant and enriched geoscience knowledge for the wider public good,” Ford said.
Ford previously held the chief geologist for England at BGS. He has primarily focused on his research on developing geological datasets and knowledge, working with stakeholders to apply this understanding and enable improved decision-making. Ford is also a Chartered Geologist, European Geologist (EurGeol) and a Fellow of the Geological Society of London.
“Jonathan is an outstanding geologist, with expertise in mapping and modelling, which continues to be an integral part of BGS, and I am delighted, on behalf of BGS and the BGS Board, to announce him in this important role,” BGS director Dr Karen Hanghøj said.
The BGS said the national geoscience programme forms a core part of BGS and underpins its role as the UK’s national geological survey. The programme is a forward-looking investment in UK geology for BGS stakeholders.
