Carbon Upcycling Technologies, a waste and carbon utilisation company, is joining the World Cement Association (WCA) as an associate corporate member.

The WCA says that Carbon Upcycling Technologies is breaking new ground in the field of circular materials, by tackling major climate issues and industrial waste through commercialising the process of converting CO2 emissions into performance-enhancing fillers for cement and concrete, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and batteries.

Carbon Upcycling can help organisations reduce the carbon intensity of their product while simultaneously sequestering CO2. They have created high-quality Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) from over 30 different feedstocks so far, including fly ash, steel slags, glass-based materials, natural pozzolans, magnesium-silicates and clays, resulting in a reduction of up to 20% of the amount of cement used in the production of concrete. Equally importantly, the upcycling process allows usage of low-grade materials and will add to the global supply of SCMs.

The Canada-headquartered company won the Carbon XPRIZE X-Factor award, is an Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) Grand Challenge Semi-finalist, and has received support from various provincial and federal entities in Canada. The company’s CEO and co-founder, Apoorv Sinha, is a Forbes 30 Under 30 awardee within the Energy category in 2020.

“Carbon Upcycling combines two important routes to lowering emissions: sequestering CO2 in concrete and increasing the availability of low carbon SCMs, so we are pleased to be welcoming Carbon Upcycling Technologies to WCA’s expanding network, and look forward to helping their business to scale,” said Ian Riley, CEO of the World Cement Association.

Apoorv Sinha, CEO and co-founder of Carbon Upcycling, commented: “Carbon Upcycling is delighted to join the WCA. By beneficiating low-grade industrial by-products from the steel, mining, and aggregate industries, Carbon Upcycling’s technology facilitates direct CO2 sequestration and provides a range of options for feedstock options to cement and concrete producers globally. We are excited by the prospect of working with WCA members in reducing their emissions cost-effectively.”
