Caterpillar has unveiled Single Life Cutting Edges for Cat medium wheeled loaders featuring a new design.

The single-bevel design means operators no longer need to monitor the wear of flipping edges which was a direct piece of feedback from Caterpillar’s customers.

“Our new maintenance-free Single Life Cutting Edges design is a direct result of our voice-of-customer program and provides significant benefits for customers who prefer not to monitor wear and flip the edges,” Caterpillar senior parts and service marketing manager Tilak Inturi said.

“Reducing throwaway material, this GET option provides up to 40 per cent lower cost compared to legacy Cat GET cutting-edge systems, depending on the loader model. The single bevel design eliminates downtime for flipping edges, providing up to 45 per cent more value for customers who do not currently flip their cutting edges.”

The new design can be adapted to retrofit on aftermarket buckets with the same hole pattern. Image: Caterpillar

The single bevel means there is no downtime or need for new hardware to flip the edges mid-life. The two cutting-edge pieces fit the bucket with no end bits required, and the new system is backed by a Cat limited warranty.

The new single-life edges are designed to increase wheel loader productivity by reducing operating and maintenance interval costs. The adaptable new design is retrofittable to aftermarket buckets with the same hole pattern. The Single-Life Cutting Edges are available for the Cat 950, 962, 966, 972, 980, and 982 loader series, including XE and GC models.

According to Caterpillar, the new design enables long wear life in high-impact and high-abrasion applications. This is due to the through-hardened DH-2 steel, which makes the Cutting Edges thicker than standard options and able to deliver similar or better wear life than those options.
