Cementos Argos starts “green” cement production line in Colombia

Cementos Argos has invested US$78m at its Rioclaro Plant in Colombia to begin manufacturing and distributing "green" cement.

The company says the cement is more environmentally friendly due to its reduced use of traditional clinker (cement base material), and instead utilises thermally activated clays (artificial pozzolana).

Argos claims that during the production process CO2emissions are reduced by up to 38% and energy consumption is cut by 30%, compared to the industry standard for a Portland cement.

Juan Esteban Calle, president of Cementos Argos, said the production method has “a gigantic growth potential in all geographies, not only from the point of view of the product, but because it is a concrete action for the sustainability of our industry.”

The new environmental cement manufacturing line has created more than 600 jobs.

The Rioclaro Plant is in the centre of Colombia, which Cementos Argos says will enable it to meet construction sector demand in the infrastructure & civil works, housing and commercial segments.
