Cementos Molins to reuse 48,000 tons of material from dismantled furnaces

Cement manufacturer Cementos Molins is reusing material resulting from the dismantling of three furnaces at its facilities in Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Barcelona.

The company says the large and complex operation operation will allow the reuse of more than 48,000 tons of waste that will be used, in part, as raw material in the manufacture of new cement in the factory’s new Line 6 kiln. Specifically, the demolition work has allowed the recovery of 35,000 tons of construction and concrete waste, 1,450 tons of refractory material, 10,000 tons of scrap and 1,500 tons of other waste.

Cementos Molins says the initiative represents an example of the circular economy and illustrates its commitment and strategic commitment to sustainability and the environment.

The dismantling of the old furnaces (3, 4 and 5) that have been inactive since 2010, has required an investment of €2m and 24 months of work. The final phase of the dismantling involved the demolition of the buildings of greater volume of concrete and of greater height.

The company says the demolition of the crude silos has been one of the most complex challenges in the entire process, adding that the culmination of the operation also completes the modification of the area’s skyline and contributes to the well-being of the territory.
