Cemex has made a considerable contribution to housebuilding across London by providing its bespoke mortar solutions to several new projects.

These developments, located in Marylebone, Southall, and Tottenham Hale, have created new affordable housing within the UK’s capital city, whilst promoting sustainability and regeneration of pre-existing sites.

In Marylebone, 40 tonnes of Cemex’s ‘OnPoint’ coloured mortar were supplied to the Portman Estate’s 19-35 Baker Street development. This project, a 10-storey all-electric building, has replaced outdated offices from the 1960s with 51 brand-new residential units, including an area dedicated to affordable housing. The building also contains designated office and retail spaces, creating new business opportunities for the surrounding area.

Cemex also collaborated with Landmark Brickwork on the Green Quarter project in Southall. Located on a 45-hectare brownfield site that has remained unused since 1973, the Green Quarter aims to become a key regeneration project in London. The development comprises 3,750 apartments, surrounded by community spaces, rejuvenated walkways, parklands, and other green areas. For this project, 3,000 tonnes of Vertua mortars were supplied, enabling a lower carbon footprint during construction.

Additionally, 167 tonnes of mortar were supplied to Grangewood for the One Ashley Road project in Tottenham Hale. This residential area comprises two blocks of flats, featuring a mixture of one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, and includes a public courtyard and a children’s play area. There are 183 homes in total, 28 of which are shared ownership properties, providing more affordable housing opportunities. The project has also achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, highlighting its more sustainable features.

Mike May, Cemex’s Commercial Manager for UK Mortars, said, “Cemex’s mission is to build a better future for everyone, which is why we are proud to have supplied our innovative and bespoke mortar solutions to housebuilding projects across London, a crucial area for urban development. Not only do these residential areas allow for more affordable homes in the city, but they are also great examples of how regeneration can drive new social, economic, and more sustainable opportunities within an area. We continue to support exciting housebuilding projects across our entire operations.”

Mortar is a key component in all building projects, accounting for up to 20% of the final structure’s visual appearance. It is therefore essential to select the right mortar for the job, based on both the visual and technical properties required for the specific application. Cemex mortars are available in a wide range of shades and colours to enhance the appearance of a project, and are ideal for large-scale and smaller builds, bedding roof tiles, and general masonry. All Cemex coloured mortars conform to British and European standards and are factory-produced, ensuring consistency and reliability.

Providing cement, ready-mix concrete, aggregates, mortar, and a comprehensive range of building materials in growing markets around the world, Cemex is powered by a multinational workforce focused on delivering a superior customer experience, enabled by digital technologies.
