CEMEX says its new admixtures cut carbon emissions and promote more sustainable construction practices

CEMEX is introducing a new range of bio-sourced admixtures designed for a reduced carbon footprint.

The building materials provider says the admixtures use natural, renewable, and locally sourced raw materials and may achieve a carbon footprint up to 70% lower than traditional oil-based admixtures.

Admixtures are added to concrete mixes to enhance attributes such as strength, workability, and water demand while reducing related carbon emissions and promoting more sustainable practices in construction.

Thanks to a unique production process, CEMEX Admixtures are the first in the building materials industry to deliver these attributes while utilizing bio-based raw materials. The new range of admixtures is part of CEMEX’s portfolio of Vertua building solutions with enhanced sustainability attributes.

The products are expected to be launched across CEMEX’s markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia and will roll out to other markets in the coming months.

“Innovation is at the core of our efforts to become a carbon-neutral company and foster a more circular building materials industry. Our new range of bio-based admixtures plays an important role in that transition,” said Fernando González, CEO of CEMEX. “Concrete, with its strength and durability, is by nature a highly sustainable and recyclable construction material. Innovative admixtures aim to enhance those sustainable attributes for our customers further.”

CEMEX says the bio-sourced admixtures aim to improve the sustainable performance of several of its products.

ISOPLAST BIO concrete plasticiser may achieve higher levels of workability with the same water content, that may enable a carbon reduction of up to 10%.

ISOFLEX BIO concrete plasticizers and superplasticizers that may reduce carbon and water use by up to 20-30%.

ISOFLOW BIO high-performance superplasticizer technology for ready-mix concrete producers, that may enable water and carbon reductions of up to 50% in concrete mix designs.

ISOMILL BIO grinding aids and cement enhancers that may provide a carbon reduction of up to 10%, higher process efficiency, and enhanced strength.

Admixtures are designed to be part of the commercial offering of CEMEX’s Urbanisation Solutions, which enable the construction of sustainable, resilient, and circular cities. CEMEX says this new product range aligns with its Future in Action programme to build a more sustainable, circular future, with the primary objective of becoming a net-zero CO2 company by 2050. Since the launch of Future in Action, the company adds that it has achieved record-breaking CO2 reductions.
