Cemex has signed an agreement with Power China International Group Limited to supply Vertua lower-carbon concrete for the construction of Phase 1 of the Independent Water Producer (IWP) project in Dubai.
This project is the world’s largest water desalination initiative, utilising innovative solar-powered osmosis technology. This plant is part of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) plan to expand the city’s water desalination capacity and achieve 100% desalinated water production through clean energy and waste heat by 2030.
Scheduled for completion in 2026, this project will significantly increase Dubai’s water desalination capacity by 180 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD). As Dubai’s population and economy continue to grow, the water demand is increasing, making this a crucial step toward ensuring a sustainable water supply for the future.
The plant is expected to begin operations in 2027. DEWA is working to increase its water desalination capacity, enhance Dubai’s water supplies from sustainable sources, and achieve ‘Dubai’s Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030’, ‘Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050’, and ‘Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050’.
Cemex’s Vertua family offers a specialised portfolio of sustainable, high-quality construction products, enabling Phase 1 of IWP to customise the project for lower-carbon optimisation. Vertua is part of Cemex’s Future in Action program, which focuses on achieving sustainable excellence through climate action, circularity, and natural resource management. The primary objective is to become a net-zero CO₂ company by 2050.
