The expansion of the chamber lock on the Moselle River will facilitate the flow of vessel traffic, with over 10,000 cargo-carrying vessels passing through each year and freight transport expected to increase to almost 17 million tonnes by 2025.
Due to its age and condition, the extensive repair work involved closing the lock every year, bringing ship traffic on the Moselle River to a standstill.
Thanks to this additional chamber, the waterway and shipping offices of Trier and Koblenz, Germany, should be able to perform future scheduled and unscheduled repairs without interrupting the river’s traffic.
