Cemex has supplied approximately 140,000m³ of a variety of specialty concretes for a modern new tram line in Zaragoza, Spain. Line 1 of the tram is 12.8km long and crosses the city from its southernmost end to the north, passing through the city centre. It was opened to the public recently, and in June, 2013 plans were announced to open a second line in 2015.

The Zaragoza Tram provides accessible and sustainable transportation for the residents of the city and represents a major upgrade to local infrastructure. Projects such as this are crucial for Zaragoza’s growing population, which has doubled in the past 50 years, reaching over 700,000 in 2010.
“This is a great example on how we are providing world-class building solutions to our customers in Spain and contributing to improving the country’s infrastructure,” says Jaime Ruiz de Haro, Cemex president in Spain.
The project required a variety of specialty concretes in order to provide the necessary strength and resistance while conserving aesthetic qualities. Some of the varieties of concrete used for the project include high-resistance concrete, lighter structural concrete, and architectural pigmented concrete. Cemex also provided concrete for building a bicycle path that runs parallel to the new tram line.
In August, 2013, Cemex and Holcim announced that they will combine all their cement, ready-mix and aggregates operations in Spain, with Cemex having a 75% controlling interest over the combined operational assets in the country.
