As Euro 2012 gets underway, Cemex has already scored a major success by providing 50,000m³ of ready-mix concrete for a state-of-the-art soccer stadium that will host several games in the competition being held in Poland-Ukraine. The new PGE Arena Stadium in Gdansk, Poland, has a capacity of 42,000 spectators and won the Architecture and Design Award at the Stadium Business Awards in May 2012. It is where Spain will start the defence of its Euro 2008 title against Italy on Sunday (10 June).

“Our participation in the construction of PGE Arena highlights our deep commitment towards providing tailor-made building solutions to our customers,” says Rüdiger Kuhn, president of Cemex in Poland and Eastern Europe.

“The Euro 2012 will bring entertainment and joy for millions of fans worldwide, and we are happy to have collaborated in this endeavour.”

During the group stage in this championship, PGE Arena will be the home base for the very competitive Group C, which includes defending Euro and World Cup champion Spain, as well as Italy, Croatia, and Ireland. It will also host one quarter-final match.

As part of the building solutions it offers, Cemex installed a mobile ready-mix concrete-batching plant at the construction site, thus minimising ready-mix delivery timing and helping to ensure that the construction work was being carried out fluidly and on time.

Cemex also provided several types of specialty ready-mix concrete products, including a special architectural self-compacting concrete, used to create exposed vertical architectural construction elements, and decorative ready-mix concrete coloured with dark grey pigments. The ready-mix concrete grating that serves as the foundation of the structure was built with 9,000m³ of a specialty ready-mix concrete ideal for such large structures.

PGE Arena pays tribute to Gdansk’s reputation as the amber capital of the world. Its exterior’s elliptical shape and yellow-orange-brown colour resembles a drop of amber, a resin which has been extracted from the Baltic coast for hundreds of years.
