Cemex has signed an agreement with Gharbia Governorate to operate the first Regenera facility in Egypt. The facility receives more than 800 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, and through this agreement, Cemex will treat the waste to generate alternative fuels and produce compost, ensuring minimal residual waste to landfill.

This agreement promotes circularity while saving approximately 50,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and decreasing methane generation by avoiding landfills. Methane has a much stronger greenhouse effect, more than 80 times that of CO2 within the first 20 years of emission. Additionally, this initiative benefits the governorate’s residents by ensuring safe treatment of all daily waste collection while reducing the negative impacts of landfilling.

As an industry leader in climate action and a commitment to being a net-zero company in 2050, Cemex’s Regenera business is part of its efforts to support a circular economy, including the receiving, managing, recycling, composting, and recovering of waste. Regenera supports the ambition to use more non-recyclable waste and industrial by-products as a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and natural raw materials.

About the new facility, Yago Castro Izaguirre, Cemex Egypt & UAE president, said: “At Cemex, we are committed to leading climate action in the industry. This is reflected in the progressive and innovative work to actualise the vision of becoming a net-zero company by 2050. The Regenera facility helps us make greater headway in preserving natural resources by relying on sustainable substitutes for fossil fuels.”

With over 20 years of experience in waste management solutions, Cemex launched Regenera, a business specialised in providing circularity solutions to extend the life cycle of products and materials by reusing them into value-added products. Regenera leverages Cemex’s global expertise and infrastructure to use waste and industrial byproducts as sustainable substitutes for fossil fuels and natural raw materials in its production processes by offering a wide range of tailored services, including reception, management, recycling, and waste coprocessing.
