CEMEX USA is providing concrete, including a specialised self-consolidating mix, along with thousands of tons of aggregates for what is claimed to be the largest bridge project in the history of Los Angeles, California. CEMEX USA is providing concrete, including a specialised self-consolidating mix, along with thousands of tons of aggregates for what is claimed to be the largest bridge project in the history of Los Angeles, California.

The materials are being supplied for the replacement of the iconic Sixth Street Viaduct Bridge.

The original 3,500-foot bridge, which has served as a backdrop in several feature films, was built in 1932 as a vital transportation link across the Los Angeles River to connect Boyle Heights with the Arts District. Over the years, the structure has deteriorated, leading to several repairs and now, the current replacement process.

The total cost of the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project is estimated at US$482mn, covered mainly by federal and state funding. The bridge is expected to be completed in late 2020.

CEMEX is expected to supply 34,405m3 of ready-mix concrete for the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project, including 4,817m3 of specialised self-consolidating mix concrete that was developed to fit the bridge’s design specifications and stringent standards required by CalTrans. CEMEX is also supplying fibre concrete for the structure itself and bridge deck. When finished, the new viaduct is expected to have ten pairs of lit arches along with stairway access and bike ramps.

CEMEX operations in California and the western US date back more than 100 years with some supplying building materials for memorable projects like the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam. CEMEX is also currently supporting the construction of the Los Angeles Purple Line Subway Extension, and recently, the company finished supplying San Francisco’s tallest skyscraper, Salesforce Tower.

Concrete for the Sixth Street Viaduct project is being supplied by CEMEX’s Los Angeles Ready Mix Plant, and the company’s operations in nearby Victorville are providing 67,000 tonnes of aggregates.
