Cemex is the main cement supplier for the new Assiut barrage project on the Nile River in Egypt.
The project is expected to provide irrigation water for 690,000 hectares, directly benefitting 5 million agricultural workers.
The Assiut project replaces the previous dam which was built in the early 20th century, and also involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant that is expected to generate 32 megawatts of energy.
Buildings material giant CEMEX supplied 160,000 tons of high-resistant, low heat of hydration cement for the project, which is designed to improve navigation through the river and also provide water and clean, renewable energy to the cities of Assiut, Minya, Beni Suef, Fayoum, and Giza.
