Utility and road construction experts from across county Yorkshire and the North East of England gathered recently for a conference covering the latest developments in aggregates.

Organised by Yorkshire-based quarrying and recycling firm Mone Brothers and timed to coincide with Northern Gas Networks’ Environment Week, the all-day event at The Village Hotel near Morley attracted over 70 delegates.

As well as a talk by Northern Gas Networks, the event featured a number of video presentations and case studies including the recent demolition of the Yorkshire Post building in Leeds and how the resultant concrete waste has been used as the foundation for a number of roads across the region.

The event also showcased the links between Mone Brothers, Hull-based Mike Wakefield Tippers and Barnsley-based E J Lidster. The three firms are working together to introduce pioneering aggregates into the Yorkshire construction and utility sectors.

Steve Horsley, director of Mone Brothers which is currently celebrating its golden anniversary, commented: “The day was a great success with a lot of knowledge shared with key individuals concerning the use of SMR (Structural Materials for Reinstatement) and HBM (Hydraulically Bound Mixtures) for utility road and footpath remedial works.

“Our links with E J Lidster and Mike Wakefield are a template for how business should be done with the sharing of best practice to ensure that this region stays ahead of the game in terms of utilising the latest aggregates,” added Horsley.
