Cummins has revealed that in the five years since Stage V was initially introduced in 2019, the company has produced over 115,000 Stage V engines for over 14,000 installations.

Its latest Performance Series products, covering the power range of 74 hp-675hp (55-503kW), will be on Cummins stand (W16) at the Hillhead event 25-27th June.  From 3.8 to 15 litre displacement, these engines come with high power and torque, are compact and easy to install, and require less servicing than their predecessors. The higher power and torque density give OEMs the ability to increase machine capabilities, offering more value.

“Cummins’ Stage V product have proven themselves to deliver strong performance with high durability and reliability across a wide range of machine types and duty cycles. We don’t rest on our laurels, and our engineers continue to develop these products to add value to our customers,” said Graham Cook, Regional Sales Leader.

Since 2019, the Stage V product line-up has been augmented with the addition of power units.  They are delivered as a complete and ready-made package that reduces engineering work for customers.  Each unit is comprised of a Stage V engine, exhaust aftertreatment system, radiator, and cooling system – as well as auxiliaries such as mounting feet, hoses, and an air cleaner. They are ideal for quarrying applications such as crushing and screening.

All of Cummins Stage V engines are approved to use HVO100 and B20 biofuels, enabling operators to drive environmental benefits using the current trusted technology.

Stop-start capability is available on the B6.7 engine, reducing wear and tear, reducing fuel use, and lowering environmental impact through improved noise and emissions. It is particularly suited to machines which idle for long periods of time during their shifts.

The key benefits of Cummins’ Stage V designs are that they are lighter, more compact, and more capable. This mindset has been adopted further for a brand-new product. Using the latest developments in engine technology Cummins has developed a new engine platform, the new X15. This engine has more power and torque than the current 15-litre product offered by Cummins.

“Our current X15 has been a proven power source in the off-highway market for many years. The clean sheet design of the new platform continues the Stage V ethos and takes it further. It is more capable, more compact, and lighter whilst retaining the same levels of reliability and durability,” added Cook.

Continued developments in engine combustion and air handling have allowed Cummins’ engineers to increase power of the new model by 4% to 522 kW / 700 hp and torque by 15% to 3200 Nm. All of this can be achieved whilst meeting the latest near-zero Stage V and Tier 4 Final emissions. The engine design is future proofed for Stage VI and Tier 5 when those regulations come into effect, minimizing impact on OEM installations.

The higher power and torque density means the new X15 could be used to power machinery more used to engines of higher displacement, without impacting site operations. Fuel consumption can be as low as 180 g/kWh, and service intervals are up to 1000 hours.  This reduces total running costs and downtime and allows OEMs and operators to minimise their environmental impact through lower CO2 and GHG emissions.

‘It is critical that Cummins invests in a wide range of technologies to support carbon reduction initiatives.  Advanced diesel remains a key part of this strategy going forward, particularly in quarrying and construction markets where machinery operates with high duty cycles often in remote locations.  The new X15 is an excellent example of our commitment to customers,” concluded Cook.
