Cummins is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its manufacturing facility in Darlington, northeast England.
Since opening in July 1965, Cummins has operated the Grade II-listed site to develop engines and other technologies that power equipment across a range of industries worldwide.
Cummins today serves over 180 customers in sectors including commercial vehicles, buses, coaches, farming, construction, material handling, marine and power generation. Cummins exports its products globally, with products found in equipment across 50 countries.

The Cummins Darlington site is one of the UK’s leading power solutions manufacturing facilities, utilising the latest generation manufacturing technology to create future-ready products, including hydrogen combustion engines.
Cummins’ capabilities to develop power solutions from Darlington that can support an effective energy transition have been recognised by the British government and monarchy. Cummins has received Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) funding for the development of hydrogen technologies, hosted site visits with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP, and received the Terra Carta Seal from His Royal Highness King Charles for a “serious commitment to putting nature, people and the planet at the heart of the economy”.
Last year, Cummins launched its new Powertrain Test Facility – one of the most advanced of its kind in Europe – in Darlington to further develop the next generation of low- and zero-emission power solutions. This £13m investment saw the creation of a 738 sq. m., two-storey site. This test facility includes fully robotic driving with manual or automatic transmission, road grade and load simulation, wheel-slip simulation, and engine duty cycle recreation.

Steve Morley, Cummins Darlington Plant Manager, said: “It’s fantastic to celebrate the heritage of Cummins in Darlington. We take great pride in what has been achieved over the last 60 years and the global impact we continue to make from this site every day. As with all large employers, we wouldn’t be celebrating any milestones without our people, so we say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the business’s collective success.
“Whilst it’s important to take stock of our past achievements, we’re very much focused on continuing to innovate and lead the future of manufacturing power solutions. No matter what the technology, we’re committed to providing the right power solutions that can continue to power industries we depend on as a society for many more years to come.”
Cummins employs over 1,750 people across its Darlington site and supports 250 apprenticeship positions across the UK, including STEM and supporting office roles in Darlington.
