A decision on the new CEO will probably be made before the end of year, said the person, who is said to have asked not to be identified because the recruitment process is private.
Johannesburg-based PPC is seeking a replacement for Ketso Gordhan, who resigned in September after his attempt to fire chief financial officer Tryphosa Ramano was blocked by fellow directors.
Castle, a former chief executive of commodity trader Trafigura Beheer’s mining division, was appointed as a non-executive director of PPC on October 17.
He is said by Bloomberg to have not been named among six directors who will help make up a new board to be voted on at the company’s annual general meeting next month.
PPC spokesman Kevin Odendaal declined to comment on the Castle candidacy, Bloomberg reports.
The board is considering a proposal to merge from AfriSam Group, South Africa’s second biggest cement company, PPC, said last week.
