Hillhouse Quarry Group has unveiled plans for a significant expansion, centred on the development of a new asphalt production facility in Scotland.
The company has announced plans to launch the new asphalt service, known as Edinburgh Asphalt, at its Soutra Mains Quarry site in Midlothian later this year. The plant, which is currently under construction and set to open in autumn 2026, will serve the east of Scotland. The facility is set to produce more than 50 asphalt mixes to CPR certification and BS EN 13108 standards, with the final products bearing the UKCA marking.
“Edinburgh Asphalt represents a significant moment for Hillhouse Group. We have long had the capability, the people and the operational foundation to serve the east of Scotland more fully, and this investment is the natural next step,” Hillhouse Quarry Group managing director Mark Munro said.
“For customers across Edinburgh and the surrounding area, it means access to locally produced asphalt backed by the quality standards and service commitment that Hillhouse has built its reputation on.”
While the Soutra Mains quarry already supplies the east of Scotland with aggregates, ready-mix concrete and concrete blocks, the new facility is one of the biggest investments in Scotland’s asphalt production capacity in recent years, according to Hillhouse Quarry Group. Once operational, the Soutra Mains site will be a full-service construction materials operation, supported by a dedicated fleet from opening, supporting local authorities, infrastructure contractors, surfacing and civil engineering firms, housebuilders and developers.
The announcement continues a major year for the Scotland-based producer, which announced Alistair Borthwick as its chief executive officer in January 2026 to scale up its operations.
