Green Earth Developments Group (GEDG) is keen to expand its big sustainability offer after acquiring the Stairfoot Quarry complex in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, from Heidelberg Materials UK.

The 29-hectare former quarries at Stairfoot have a rich industrial history dating back to the nineteenth century. The complex comprises a series of former clay pits used for the manufacture of bricks, many of which have been previously infilled. The remaining mineral void at Yew Tree Quarry requires pumping and restoring to enable the creation of the proposed nature reserve. Under the stewardship of GEDG, the site will now be managed as a local environmental asset in perpetuity.

GEDG is a purpose-driven, ethical business with a mission to deliver sustainable solutions for the divestment and re-purposing of brownfield sites across the UK. The company’s core strength is the ability to convert difficult legacy sites of the past into unique environmental and community assets of the future, including former landfills, quarries, lagoons, and chemical works.

In 2022, GEDG acquired Whitehead’s former landfill in Wigan, followed closely by the acquisition of Astley Sand & Aggregates near Leigh from Casey Group. The former Weston quarries site in Runcorn was then added to the portfolio from Akzo Nobel, creating a stronghold in the Northwest. The addition of the Barnsley-based quarry marks the Company’s expansion across the north of the UK, with additional acquisitions due to be announced imminently.

GEDG has also partnered with Tata Chemicals to restore three regionally important sites in Cheshire, demonstrating their tenure-agnostic approach to working with legacy assets and returning them to nature and the community.
