Heidelberg Materials France has completed a significant project at its Airvault cement plant, which will support the usage of alternative fuels.

The company said the project, which took 1289 days, was its newest cement plant since the construction of its plant in Bussac, Charente-Maritime, in 1978.

The project was a significant undertaking with Heidelberg Materials providing the following statistics for the Airvault cement plant:

  • More than 350 million euros
  • Covering an area of 21 hectares
  • Up to 700 people per day are involved
  • Around 18,000 tonnes of steel
  • 38,000 m3 of concrete poured

The project will see the plant have a reduced reliance on fossil fuels, with an expected increase in consumption of alternative fuels up to 90 per cent going forward.

“With the flame of furnace 6 now lit, Airvault, which is more than a hundred years old, is starting its new life,” Heidelberg Materials France posted.

“A big thank you to all those who contributed to making the transformation project of the Airvault cement plant a concrete reality. Our employees first, our partners of course, but also our customers who, through their trust and their desire to promote less carbon-intensive products, encourage us in our transformation.

“Thank you to the State and its services who have supported this project from the beginning, as well as all the institutional and economic players in the area, showing every day how perfectly this site is anchored in local life.”
