HeidelbergCement has been given the top A score ranking for a third consecutive time by global environmental non-profit organisation CDP.

The cement producer was recognised for its actions to reduce emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop the low-carbon economy.

HeidelbergCement is one of 272 best-performing companies, out of nearly 12,000 that were scored overall.

The companies included in the CDP A-list are considered to be leading on corporate environmental ambitions, actions and transparency worldwide. As part of its efforts to tackle climate change, HeidelbergCement has embedded CO2 reduction targets in its remuneration systems.

The company also recently signed the UN-backed Business Ambition for 1.5° Commitment aimed at reducing emissions with transparent action plans and robust targets. HeidelbergCement has also announced plans to save up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 with several CCU/S projects already underway.

Dr. Dominik von Achten, chairman of HeidelbergCement’s managing board, said the continued CDP recognition underlines his company’s global climate leadership.

“Implementing our carbon reduction roadmaps worldwide and heading the way globally with our ambitious CCU/S (carbon capture, utilisation and storage) plans are at the centre of our climate strategy,” said von Achten.

HeidelbergCement’s chief sustainability officer Dr. Nicola Kimm added: “In addition to our initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint, we are improving our water management systems to reduce consumption, especially where water is scarce.”

CDP’s detailed methodology allocates a score of A to D- to participating companies, based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership, such as setting ambitious and meaningful targets.
