HeidelbergCement's Polish subsidiary, Górażdże Cement, and the multinational company BayWa r.e. have signed a purchase agreement for electricity from Witnica Solar Park.
The new 64MWp-capacity site will be connected to the Polish electricity grid in the first half of 2021 and supply HeidelbergCement in Poland with green electricity until 2031.
Witnica Solar Park will be the largest solar energy plant in Poland. HeidelbergCement will be the primary consumer of its green electricity, and the solar park will reduce the company’s CO2 footprint and Polish power generation as a whole.
The agreement with Baywa r.e. is another step for HeidelbergCement on the way to achieving carbon neutrality. By 2025, the company aims to reduce specific net CO2 emissions to below 525kg per tonne of cementitious material. This figure corresponds to a reduction of 30% compared to 1990 – previously only targeted for 2030. The company has also committed itself to offer carbon-neutral concrete by 2050 at the latest.
