Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM) has introduced a new camera monitoring system, SkyAngle. Developed in conjunction with Clarion, the system has been designed to enhance the safety features of the machines through facilitating multiple viewing options, one of which is a bird’s eye view of immediate surroundings.
The new technology takes synthesised images from several wide-angle cameras mounted on the machine and displays them in the cab. The operator can choose from either wide-angle or close-up views to focus on vehicles. A parallel display option is also available, showing one of these views next to a traditional rear monitoring system image.
SkyAngle has been tested for durability, functionality and performance on Hitachi rigid mining dump trucks. It will initially be available on these machines, before being applied to other products, such as ultra-large hydraulic excavators.
“The safety benefits of the SkyAngle system are considerable. It allows operators to quickly assess what is happening around the machine, such as the position of other equipment, service vehicles or personnel,” says Greg Smith, heavy and mining equipment manager at Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe).
