Holcim has collaborated with the Swedish start-up Paebbl and the general contractor Goldbeck to apply carbon-storing technology to its innovative concrete.
The Holcim concrete was used in a commercial-scale application to build the foundations of a logistics centre for a global retail giant in South Germany. According to the company, the concrete floor slab mix achieved a 15 per cent reduction in cement use compared to the reference CEM II/B-M. The company also said it permanently sequestered 886kg of CO2 through mineralisation across the 420m2 project area.
The project advanced from concept to implementation in six months, including laboratory tests at Holcim Innovation Centre in Lyon and plant trials in South Germany to evaluate concrete workability, air content, and bleeding.
“With this project, we’ve proven how we can scale innovative technologies for a more sustainable built environment,” Holcim MAQER Ventures’ Bengt Steinbrecher said.
“It’s the result of a great collaboration with our partners, showing that construction innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum – but through a collaborative ecosystem.”
