Holcim Germany joins circular economy platform

Holcim Germany has become a member of Madaster - an online platform and digital directory for buildings, materials and infrastructure.

Madaster aims to develop the circular economy in the construction and real estate industries through the use of existing and disused buildings as sources of raw materials, in which the material is recycled or reused.

Holcim Germany says the Madaster directory contains all the necessary information about buildings, construction products and materials stored in an online cloud platform. Twenty-one companies are now members of the directory.

“The use of alternative raw materials and the closing of product cycles are among the greatest challenges in the construction industry,” says Thorsten Hahn, CEO of Holcim Germany. “We owe it to future generations to use the resources that are available to us responsibly and sensibly. To do this, we have to break new ground. For example, by extending the lifespan of our products or by recycling them, thereby giving them a second and third life. With Madaster we are taking a big step closer to the vision of a circular economy.”

At Madaster, every listed building receives a ‘material pass’, on which the material value and the current residual value of raw materials are shown. Holcim Germany says this new transparency about material values and properties creates a reliable data source for architects, project developers and property developers in order to be able to plan the reuse of construction elements and materials in future projects in the long term.

Dr. Patrick Bergmann, MD of Madaster Germany, commented: “A targeted material recording in the planning phase and the seamless transfer of information about the quality and origin of the materials and their current location over the entire life cycle is essential for circular construction and building management. With Holcim, we have a strong partner who can influence and shape this challenge directly during material production and in the construction phase”.
