Lafarge Africa has officially rebranded as HBM Nigeria Plc, signalling a new chapter for the company under the ownership of Huaxin Building Materials Group.
The transition was announced at an official ceremony, which Huaxin Building Materials Group (HBMG) said marked a “landmark milestone in HBMG’s long-term commitment to the West African market.”
The transition of Lafarge Africa’s Nigerian division to be fully under the HBMG’s brand comes after its parent company announced its own rebrand earlier this year from Huaxin Cement Co. HBMG chief executive officer Li Yeqing said at the time the company’s overall rebrand reflected its shift into a global group with multiple brands in several markets.
At the HBM Nigeria ceremony, Li Yeqing said HBMG will deploy its technologies and frameworks to “build HBM Nigeria into West Africa’s leading building materials enterprise” and support Nigeria’s economic progress. This will also include diversifying the full product portfolio, supporting transition to “greener” processes and technologies as well as building a local management workforce.
HBM Nigeria chief executive officer Lolu Alade-Akinyemi said the rebrand was a “pivotal milestone for the business” as it integrates into HBMG’s global plans. The ceremony showcased to attendees that HBMG had a long-term vision and a strategic roadmap for the area, including deepening its local presence.
It comes after HBMG completed an acquisition of 83.81 per cent of Lafarge Africa Plc in August 2025, making it the majority shareholder. HBMG has recognised Nigeria as its “core strategic hub” for West Africa, with four large-scale cement production complexes and a supply chain that covers ready-mix concrete, aggregates, and solid waste recycling and treatment.
HBMG has outlined Africa as a key part of its international expansion, with the company already having a presence in seven African nations. On a broader note, HBMG has manufacturing facilities in 14 countries, meaning the Chinese-headquartered operation now has a significant overseas production capacity.
