Police and HSE have launched an investigation into the death of a contractor at Europe’s largest granite quarry.

The man who died at Mountsorrel Quarry, in Leicestershire, England, yesterday (21 June) was a contractor working at the site, quarry owner and operator Tarmac has confirmed.

Leicestershire Police were called to the quarry in Wood Lane, Mountsorrel, just after 5am yesterday to a report of a man being injured. A force spokesperson said the man was pronounced dead at the quarry.

The spokesperson added: “Enquiries are ongoing at the quarry and the Health and Safety Executive is assisting us in establishing the circumstances surrounding the death.”

A spokesperson for Tarmac said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm a contractor, working at Mountsorrel Quarry, lost his life yesterday. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the man’s family, friends and colleagues.

“We are all shocked and saddened by this news and will continue to do all we can to help the authorities with their investigations, and to provide care and support for the team on site. As this investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment at this stage.”

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said: “HSE is aware and inspectors have been on site assisting the police.”
