As part of Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 May), the UK Institute of Quarrying (IQ) is reminding its members of the mental health and wellbeing support services that are available.

The institute says its services are more needed than ever due to the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. Along with its international affiliate offices in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and South Africa, the IQ is signposting members to its support services such as expert advisors, providing vital outreach services and producing guidance materials.

IQ UK CEO James Thorne comments: “In the UK, the Institute of Quarrying has been delivering webinars to raise mental health awareness, alongside guidance to help improve sleep and the challenges of isolation and loneliness. Members can also access a suite of mental health resources via the IQ Connect app, which we launched during the outbreak of the pandemic to help members easily access content across a range of topics.”

IQ international presidents chair Shane Braddy highlights World Health Organisation research that shows COVID-19 has disrupted or halted critical mental health services in 93% of countries worldwide.

“The international IQ network has witnessed how the pandemic has affected the mental health of people in their own countries,” says Braddy. “We want to remind members of the ongoing programme of support available from your affiliate IQ in times of difficulty.”

Braddy adds that a strategic objective of the international IQ network is to support the sector in working towards a healthier and safer industry.

“The strength of the Institutes working together, sharing experiences and knowledge in this challenging period demonstrates the value that we bring to our members and the quarrying community globally,” Braddy says.

Mental health and wellbeing support services are available through Mates in Mind, Mental Health Foundation, Mind, Mental Health First Aid England, St John Ambulance and NHS Every Mind Matters.
