Johnsons Services has bought a Terex Finlay 883 to handle material arising from a new tram project.

The Nottingham, England-based recycling company trialled a range of different machines until Steve Johnson, director and founder of Johnsons Services, decided the Terex Finlay 883 would be the best suited screen to cope with the heavy workload.

Having hired machines from Finlay Hire as required, Johnson felt the forward facing screen was the ideal solution to cope with the increased recycling demand created by the new contract in Nottingham city centre.

The 883 reclaimer can process 1,000tonnes/day and is being used as a primary screen for the incoming inert spoil, which is then crushed and reused in concrete and various other construction projects as a secondary aggregate.

Johnsons Services is also using it as a primary screen for processing incinerated bottom ash before further recycling with its fixed plant. The process is saving the company money on fuel and lowering emissions as transporting the material to nearest landfill is a round trip of over 320km.

The 883’s steel apron feeder is said to be essential for recycling operations as it eliminates damage, ripping and costly replacement caused to a conventional belt feeder.

The CAT C4.4 engine complies with Euro 4 emission standards, which is allowing the company to comply with the tier three legislations for screening and screening equipment.

“The 883 is very flexible and will certainly cover everything that we need it to. We can change the decks on it fairly easily which means I can take it off one product and put it on to another fairly quickly,” says Steve Johnson.

“The introduction of the versatile machine will increase productivity and help with any future contracts the company receives,” says Neil Bailey of Finlay Central, part of the Finlay Group of companies.
