French construction materials group Lafarge is adding RFID chips to its concrete in the mixing stage to supply clients with traceability and data storage services throughout the concrete's life cycle. The special concrete is already being used in the D2 tower in La Défense, Paris, with a chip for every 2m³ of concrete, but the quantity of chips can be adapted to meet a client's needs.
French construction materials group Lafarge is adding RFID chips to its concrete in the mixing stage to supply clients with traceability and data storage services throughout the concrete’s life cycle.
The special concrete is already being used in the D2 tower in La Défense, Paris, with a chip for every 2m³ of concrete, but the quantity of chips can be adapted to meet a client’s needs.
Lafarge has also created a device that can read the embedded chips’ identification numbers. From that number, traceability information (including date and time of fabrication, plant of origin and delivery number, among other information) becomes available.
Lafarge will launch its chip reading service in 2014. The service will include cloud storage for data related to the concrete for use during dismantling or renovation.
