Lafarge has carried out repairs to the structure which now carries a conveyor beltWorks to repair an historic 150 year old bridge at a Lafarge’s Mountsorrel quarry in the UK have been successfully completed and restored the structure to its former glory. The railway bridge – known as 1860 Bridge due to the year of its construction – provides and important link for transporting aggregates from the granite quarry. The 30m long brick built single span bridge used to carry a railway line over the River Soar and is regarded as one of the finest examples of this kind of structure in the UK. Lafarge has invested £30,000 in repairing rendering and pointing to ensure the bridge’s future. The railway line is no longer operational but the bridge now carries a conveyor that transports 1200tonnes per hour from the quarry to the railhead at Barrow upon Soar. Around two thirds of the aggregates produced at Mountsorrel are transported by rail, making the bridge an essential part of the production at the site. The 1860 Bridge was built to connect the quarry to the rail network
