LafargeHolcim supplies Athens transport integration project

Building materials company LafargeHolcim has provided concrete for the Line 3 metro project that is helping to link the Athens public transport network.

The newly integrated transport network will connect metro lines and redesigned bus routes in the Greek capital to sea and air connections. The Line 3 Metro extension with six new stations is one of the plan’s most important pieces.

LafargeHolcim’s Heracles Group teams have provided support to the project, as well as 80,000m3of high-quality concrete.

The material contributions include tailor-made solutions such as a foam concrete for lightweight fill construction. This special and customised product simulates the soil behaviour before the real excavation begins. Around 7,000 m3of this tailor-made and new cellular concrete was used to fill a 125m tunnel section that allowed safe excavation while at the same time contributing to the overall project efficiency.

The new Line 3 metro is scheduled to be completed in 2022, by which time 27 new stations will help transport 140,000 passengers daily.

The first three stations were inaugurated in July this year as part of Athens’ Line 3 metro extension – a €730m investment in an area faced with intense road traffic and a shortage of public transport services. The three new stations are expected to serve 63,000 passengers daily, connecting Piraeus port – the largest port in the country and one of the most important distribution hubs in Europe – with Athens’ city centre and with the Eleftherios Venizelos international airport.

LafargeHolcim says the new metro line will also help take an estimated 11,000 cars off the road, which corresponds to 120 fewer tonnes of CO2per day.
