Low Carbon Materials (LCM), an Earthshot Prize finalist and pioneer in sustainable construction materials, has proudly announced it is understood to be the first start-up in this sector to achieve the prestigious PAS 2080 certification. The company was formally recognised for this achievement at the BSI Sustainability Showcase, held at the House of Commons.

Dedicated to accelerating the race to Net-Zero and fostering a circular economy, LCM is revolutionising the built environment with its next-generation concrete and asphalt additives. Recognising the critical reliance on these materials, LCM developed its flagship products, ACLA and OSTO, designed to decarbonise construction projects significantly. Their innovative solutions have already been successfully implemented across numerous projects throughout the UK, in collaboration with leading organisations, including Tarmac, Breedon, MGL Group, Skanska, Kenson Highways, Milestone Infrastructure, National Highways, and a range of local authorities such as Durham County Council, Central Bedfordshire Council, Redcar and Cleveland, and Redbridge Council.

Rahul Shah, Built Environment Global Director at BSI, said: “The construction sector has a central role to play in supporting the transition to net zero. Achieving verification to the carbon management standard (PAS 2080) underscores Low Carbon Material’s dedication to advancing sustainable infrastructure and playing its part in the sector’s journey.

“This certification highlights the organisation’s proactive approach to integrating carbon reduction across all aspects of operations and demonstrates the vital role of robust carbon management in building a greener built environment and ultimately accelerating progress towards a sustainable future.”

Achieving PAS 2080 certification powerfully demonstrates LCM’s deep commitment to sustainability and its leadership in developing and deploying low-carbon and carbon-negative solutions for construction. It underscores LCM’s dedication to monitoring and reducing its own emissions, mirroring its support for the industry’s carbon reduction efforts, and solidifying its position as a thought leader in sustainable construction.

As a globally recognised standard, PAS 2080 provides a robust framework for effective whole-life carbon emission management in infrastructure projects. This certification rigorously verifies LCM’s capability to drive carbon reduction across its entire value chain, from responsible material sourcing to project delivery, and highlights its commitment to sharing knowledge and best practice. By adhering to PAS 2080’s stringent requirements, LCM not only proves its environmental responsibility but also offers clients unparalleled assurance that its products and processes meet the highest industry standards for carbon management.

“Becoming the first start-up to achieve PAS 2080 certification fills us with immense pride,” said Dr Natasha Boulding, CEO of Low Carbon Materials. “This is a pivotal moment that validates our relentless pursuit of innovation and our ambition to be at the forefront of decarbonising the built environment. We are not just creating novel materials; we are actively shaping the future of sustainable construction and are determined to lead the industry by example. This certification is a critical step in that journey, offering our partners confidence in our stringent carbon management practices.”

In 2022, LCM’s groundbreaking work was recognised through its selection as a finalist for The Earthshot Prize, founded by Prince William. This prestigious award has provided access to a vital global network of experts, collaborators, and resources, significantly accelerating LCM’s decarbonisation efforts and expanding the reach of its transformative solutions.

LCM hopes that this pioneering achievement will inspire other start-ups and SMEs within the industry to pursue certification to the PAS 2080 standard.
